In addition to current tools that allow users to search VIP21 through various criteria available on drop-down lists, Veritext has now enabled the service to accept natural language queries such as “transcripts with the word Penicillin” or “transcripts with defendant Smith.” VIP21 now can also be accessed over interfaces optimized for email and wireless devices that will closely mimic the desktop experience.
Natural language searches of transcripts stored on VIP21 can be conducted using criteria including case name, plaintiff name, defendant name, scheduling attorney, deposing attorney, witness name, field of expertise, city, state and date range. Users simply enter their requests in the search box of the desktop interface, in the request box on a wireless web interface or in the subject line of an email. The updated VIP21 is flexible enough to allow users to type abbreviations or custom phrases, and over time learns patterns of specific user requests. Results are displayed in a format that works best for the modality used to search the database; navigation tools permit users to easily jump to specific sections in documents retrieved by the search; and the transcript’s concordance – an alphabetical listing of the principal words in a document – allows users to jump to the page of the transcript containing the occurrence of a desired word.

Steven J. Feder, Esq., of Pepper Hamilton LLC in Philadelphia, also a VIP21 client, echoed Pokotilow 's sentiments, and said the ability to search the Veritext VIP21 transcript database via the BlackBerry would yield multiple benefits for his firm. "This will be a great tool for use with my BlackBerry," he said. "It will save a lot of time and readily provide me with transcript information."
